Lie in Ruins formed in 1993 and hails from Finland so you can expect high quality Old School Death MetalFor fans of bands such as: GRAVE, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, CRYPT OF KERBEROS, ETERNAL DARKNESS and MOONDARK!!
Lie in Ruins sure took their time, as this is their debut after their creation back in 1993. But judging from the sound quality they’re still stuck in the early eighties. As soon as the intro is over the overly dense production sets in, which really makes Architecture of the dead sound like an old demo. Music wise not much is different from those old days either, as this is firmly grounded in the old school death metal sound. The pace is mainly quite slow, with rare moments of speed (it never reaches blasting, though, so don’t imagine incredible speed). The raw and dirty guitar work slickly recaptures the haunting aura of the early works of Entombed and the likes. Unfortunately this doesn’t last throughout the entire CD, and after a few songs my interest starts to fade. Sometimes it’s like they ran out of good ideas for riffing. But nevertheless there are a few tracks that are quite great. The vocals are harsh, the drumming and strings works together perfectly to create an atmosphere where the dead rises from their graves to once again walk the earth. But, I still have a hard time fully enjoying it since the sound quality could’ve been better. It’s a bit too murky and rough, and kills a bit of the quality that pops up. Although I guess someone who’s really headstrong about their old school death metal, and won’t quite claiming ‘those were the days’ will get a kick.
