CD Limited To 200 Copies!! Track 8 Caspathian Forest cover!!
An old school black metal band from Italy, Aamon are back with their second full length record, ‘The Deep Abyss of R’lyeh’, out now through Wolfmond Productions. Featuring current and former members of the likes of Shadowthrone, Abgott and Northern Tod, the follow up to 2020’s ‘Black Wind of the Plague’ seems very much likely to continue its traditional second wave direction.
The deep abyss, it turns out, is full of scathing black metal, writhing in blastbeat agony and harsh shrieks, reminiscient of Marduk or Dark Funeral. There is very little air to breathe in the likes of ‘Ready to Arise and Rule’, punishing black metal is your life now. It almost feels strange to say that this isn’t a one dimensional record though, because in many ways it can be. That dimension is powerful, dark and savage, but there are more than enough subtle changes in tempo and even some lingering traces of melody sneaking in, especially in the majestic thrust of ‘The Tomb’. Aamon take the best of classic black metal, but ensure to infest it with an insatiable hunger for dark, crawling terror. Even the most ardent of old school black metal fans will tell you that the best albums from that era had more than enough dynamic songwriting in them, and it is the same here.
Combining the brutal power of Marduk with the glorious, regal darkness of Satyricon and Gorgoroth, Aamon’s work is a majestic hymn to classic black metal’s most primal of appeal. It is dark yet sinisterly melodic, fast yet perfectly paced, grand yet not overblown. By the time that howling abyssal roar of ‘Viaggio attraverso le fredde terre di Svarttjern’ brings the album to a close, you are ready to pledge yourself to the nameless gods forevermore. Great stuff.
