No nonsense, no bullshit, this is 30 minutes of pure black metal madness and aggression. "Totalitarian Black Metal" is a fast, punchy and wrathful album with a lot of brutality and blast beats but also a lot of groove. When it comes to the blast parts it is close to a lot of work by Marduk, in the other hand when it comes to the groovy parts it's like if you put Carpathian Forest in a war battlefield. The album doesn't take itself too seriously with some unpredictably funny samples which adds on great to the overall fun experience that is the album itself. The song titles are also not the most serious piece of work and It just makes me like the album even more with songs titles like "Stairway to Oven". While the album isn't trying to be serious, the music in the sound itself is pretty seriously and well crafted. Every double kick groove after the blast beat is perfectly placed and punches through you with no breaks or rest. While listening to the album you can constantly have images in your head that the music creates, even without the lyrics you can understand everything the songs are trying to say.
Kaiser's vocals on this one are hate driven and heavily distorted screams of bestiality and they obviously fit to the album very well. The guitars and rest of the instruments are closer to the old school black metal that the later sound of the scene and I'm all for it. Another thing worth mentioning is the fantastic guitar tone that sounds as wrathful and as grounding as the rest of the instruments and the idea of the album. Now I might be jumping to putting a review too fast since I have only listened to the album 2 times before writing this and am currently listening to it the 3rd time while writing this so I haven't collected all my thoughts yet in full. But that is what this album is supposed to do, not let you think and shatter your thoughts with amazing destructive and punchy black metal. The album is a fresh stand out release with most new releases being too deep, serious and experimental. Not saying that it is bad for black metal, but the scene is currently flooded with that type of albums and sometimes we just need a no brain fun release like "Totalitarian Black Metal".
In conclusion, "Totalitarian Black Metal" is the highly anticipated seventh full length studio album by Ad Hominem and it fucking delivered. If you are a fan of Ad Hominem's previous work, this will not disappoint you. The album is not on streaming platforms, but it is available through YouTube and physical media by Osmose Productions. Overall great album for the beginning of the year and a easy, catchy and fun listen for a change.
