This one was primarily a purchase because I liked their logo and artwork a lot. It straddles that fine line between cheesy and awesome so good, that I could not be helped to be in total awe of it. Good thing the music is pretty decent, because there I took a bit of a leap of fate, to be honest.
Atomic Curse play the kind of black-ish thrash/speed metal that has seen a big resurgence these last years, with the exception that these ruffians predate the whole trend by a good couple of years, because this is a release from 2009. It makes Atomic Curse and their first full length "Mortal Dawn ..." feel a lot more genuine than a lot of the bands doing the same deal these days, that's for sure.
When it comes to music, the band is clearly inspired by the unsophisticated early sounds of Sodom, Whiplash and Bathory, but I think you could also add acts like Minotaur, NME and "Morbid Visions" era Sepultura to the list as well. The music is predominantly uptempo, with only sparse slower sections, so it all flies by in rabid fashion. The mandatory speedy riffing is being underpinned by excellent rapid-fire drumming and some truly acidic, reverb-drenched vocals, bringing to mind old heroes like Violent Force, the earliest Kreator and Mutilator. This is some high-octane and truly vitriolic music for sure. Some well-placed shredding lead work puts the icing on this putrid cake, with a clear (perhaps even a tad too civilized) and powerful production wrapping it all up, neat and tidy.
The thing is that the tracks themselves are pretty interchangeable among each other, with the only exception being "A.S.D. (Alcoholic Scream of Destruction)" with its hooky chorus. Looking at this album from a purely objective angle, you could claim that it is one of those releases where you could make the claim that it is one long song, but isn't that kinda par for the course in this particular genre? Still, this is simply a nice blast of straightforward blackened thrash/speed metal mayhem, best enjoyed on high volume.
Seeing the renaissance this particular genre is having nowadays, it would be nice to see Atomic Curse get some more acknowledgement. They were in early on the game, and just by that fact alone they feel more genuine for it. It was a cool band who did some great music, and it would be a shame to see their only full length drown in the sea of releases that is flooding the nostalgia scene these days.
