Czech trio Chlad (Czech for “cold”) was founded in 2017 and released three EPs in the following three years until I guess they decided to finally record a full-length album which took them a couple of years to write. In the meantime they signed with Parat Productions and released a compilation of all three EPs which was also distributed for free with Parat Magazine, so quite a push for the band I guess. “Morana”, their debut album, was recorded in 2022 and released in May 2023 by the same Parat Productions and features only 6 tracks, but long tracks, typical for Doom Metal, the total duration being 40 minutes. Chlad’s music could be described as traditional Doom Metal with simple, unpretentious compositions that stick to your mind after the audition, they all have something memorable even though the lyrics are in Czech and non-speakers might have problems relating to the material; even though the band thought of this and decided to have the lyrics printed in both Czech and English in the CD booklet. The most striking element on this album, beside the already mentioned memorability factor, is its stripped down production, very organic, raw I’d say, although warm and soothing, absolutely perfect for this type of music, you’ll feel like you’re playing a ’70’s Doom Metal album, so fans of Black Sabbath, Trouble or Pentagram will have a blast playing it. The band had a similar production on the previous EPs, but compared to them this time they polished the sound a bit yet without taking anything from that rawness they used their fans with. Composition-wise the tracks are ranging from slow and dragging, to mid-tempo and groovy, there’s a nice variety in writing style, and at the same time it all feels unitary and curdled. As mentioned before the band keeps a simple and straight to your face attitude that gets the listener involved and interested. It’s clear they know what they are after and this album from my point of view is a real success in delivering exactly that, highly recommended for fans of above-mentioned bands and not only.
