Upon listening to The Sound of Perseverance by the band "Death", I was blown away by what I had just listened to. It was nothing like I had listened to before. I was just getting into metal, with rather surface level acts, such as "Metallica". My brother had suggested I listen to the group after he had discovered the song "Voice of the Soul", off of this album. I wished to listen to heavier and heavier bands, and so I decided to try it out and fell in love with a new genre.Chuck Schuldiner's voice is perfect for this type of music; it is a raspy high-pitched scream and fits with the aggression most commonly associated with metal. The guitars and drums on this album are wonderful, with churning riffs that give and keep on giving. Schuldiner's lyrics are on point, and are surprisingly motivational and upbeat, contrasted by the rather angry sounding music and vocal delivery, calling to mind the words of Ronnie James Dio. It is this style of vocal that Chuck uses that I prefer, rather than his standard low pitched death growl. The drums of "Scavenger of Human Sorrow" are a wonderful start, with great guitars following suit. "Bite the Pain" is an amazing follow up, with a very nice sounding beat to it, however my favorite song off of this album is the song that follows it directly after, "Spirit Crusher". Welcoming the listener with a great bass intro, it leads into an awesome riff-based song, with my most beloved section of it being the guitar parts during the chorus, "No guilt, it feeds in plain sight...". Melodic and incredibly energetic, this is the highlight of the album for me. Close contenders would most definitely be the haunting guitar solo during the middle of "Flesh and the Power It Holds" as well as the instrumental "Voice of the Soul", a sorrowful lament of a song, and is surprisingly touching. Side B offers some nice songs, such as the previously mentioned "Voice of the Soul" but also "To Forgive is To Suffer" and "A Moment of Clarity" but out of all of the tracks on the second part of the album, I have to say that "Painkiller" is the best. It is an incredible vocal performance, with Chuck's voice soaring higher and higher than what I previously thought was possible for a human. It's wonderful and is a great closer of the album.Overall, I believe that The Sound of Perseverance is Death's greatest work, with wonderful vocals, superb guitar and drums, meaningful and motivational lyrics that offer insight into the human condition (a common theme of the band), making it a perfect introduction to the genre of death metal. There are no bad songs on this album, and all of them are wonderful in their own right.
