Jon was clearly as uncompromising with regards to his aspiration of dedicating his life to being a black metal frontman as anyone else from a young age, and he decided to put an end to it not long after having had substantial success as an underground metal artist, with absolutely no concern for how much time he might have had left on this planet after he got to this exact point in his career I'm sure. I don't really know why I would have to explain to anyone who has attentively listened to this record why I'm considering this a pristine artistic offering, and the fact that the 2 previous albums were absolutely flawless in every way doesn't make me automatically come to the conclusion that they should have made something that is intentionally conceived in a way that would be supposed to match or exceed the expectations of a large portion of their audience.
Each track here contributes its own subtly distinctive and chaotic atmosphere which, while it would seem obvious that none of them is really meant to stand out at any point because of the production and composition, allows the intensity of the riffs and the rhythm to be continually shifting and after a while it becomes apparent that there is a very deliberate direction in the song structure until the last minute.
One thing that I think this record is doing as well or better than virtually anything else is the way the instruments seem to make each other sound more impactful with the subtle atmosphere created by the guitars in the background. I'd say the guitar tone and the drum sound are ideal for the compositions on this record. Black Dragon begins with an intro that highlights how much conviction and determination can be felt throughout the tracks, with vocals that almost seem to be overpowering every instrument when it comes to the intensity at times. Starless Aeon is simply as close as it gets to perfection with music like this. It starts with one of the sickest riffs on any of the songs and progressively builds up an absolutely cold and merciless sounding atmosphere within the first 2 minutes with powerful and highly thoughtful guitars. Those solos are truly flawless. They pack a serious punch just like the riffs.
God of Forbidden Light is as catchy as it gets. It represents very well the album as a whole since half of the tracks sound somewhat similar to this one, focusing more on creating an enthralling sound that you can get addicted to very quick if you're not getting immediately disappointed by the approach they took with this one.
Overall, this may be considered a hit or miss by some, and even though I don't think that's necessarily the wrong way to look at it, for me it seems unreasonable, if not absolutely delusional, to claim this is anything but a monumental and triumphant opus that has been and will continue to be adored by many for the foreseeable future.
