The albums in today’s DS Sunday set are going to get grimier and darker as we progress, so for second feature, we visit the Basque Country for an audience with the bleak medieval old school sounds of Elffor.
A moody epic that follows the foggy trails of the genre’s forefathers, The Silent Watchtower is steeped in a gloomy atmosphere of menace and tense suspense, with low strings vibrating the soil, and sweeping synths lifting the sound towards the silvery moon, punctuated by sparse by grand flourishes of percussion.
Nearing his 40th release, it is no surprise that Elffor wields a mastery over his craft.
