I've don't think i've heard a demo so brilliant in a while. In everyway shape and form there is nothing that defies the greatness of this demo release. Being the third demo by Epheles you can tell this project has put a lot of time and effort into building and evolving into such a masterpiece french BM release that is worthy to be noted of. Upon listening i sat in awe over the beauty. The dark atmospheres and the feeling of being in the wraths of hell with this release.
Winds of Despair Crucis Umbra quickly direct themselves into very raw, lightning fast black metal anthems worthy of hearing by all purveyors of the black metal arts. It may sound like every other black metal release from the sound of this review, but the man behind Epheles will show you otherwise that there is quite a brilliant aura of musical brilliance behind his masterpiece black metal tracks. The guitar playing far surpasses the typical tremolo picking you'll find in most of today's black metal, but rather a proof of more skill behind his album that you hardly can find in other releases, especially in modern black metal nature.
Lange aux yeux fits a minimal dark/eerie ambient pattern that's very reminding of something you would hear off of a burzum release, but in a darker sense than the melodic ambient masterpieces you would typically hear from Burzum in that time. Epheles takes a bigger step away from light in bringing the ambient section of this demo into the depths of hell with him. This ambient phase seems to continue throughout the rest of this album with Les Livres De Sang.
For those who wish to find a beautifully composed black metal/ambient demo I would start here. Epheles is one project around now that is far superior to most other modern black metal these days, demo or otherwise. Upon listening you will see a fantastic display of darkness, and hatred coming from the very heart of hell with lord satan. If this demo isn't absolute brilliance I could never explain what was. I recommend this demo to all purveyors of the almight black metal art. This is what modern black metal should sound like!
