FORNICUS are back with their third full length of blackened death metal destruction.Hammering drums and thunderous bass draws in a dark and brooding sound, already offering tons of atmospheric excellence as the guitars pour forth with traditional Black Metal riffing, this builds into monstrous intensity with a gloriously primal feel. A scream pulls in an onslaught of blastbeats and maniacal riffing with a huge production, conjuring a storm of truly magnificent extreme metal into fruition. While the start is very much black metal, we delve into brutal riffs and guttural vocals punctuated by pounding drums in true death metal fashion very quickly, this pattern reoccurs often on the record as the band sort of ebb and flow between genres in a really unique and crushingly heavy fashion.Barbaric and ferocious, the malevolent hammering drums and piercing riffs continue to crush all in their path with a well-varied vocal performance to match the ever-changing instrumental savagery. While relentlessly aggressive, there is plenty of melody on this record too which strongly resembles the iconic sounds of Dark Funeral in parts while other sections feel more akin to Belphegor. We also see some really doomy parts that drag out, adding a brutally sombre texture to the otherwise malignant tempest of instrumental violations. There is definitely an interesting mix of sounds to be found here with an excellent ability to transcend seamlessly, never letting anything stick out of place.Decimating heaviness seems to be present throughout, though from many different angles which is where things get interesting. The black metal and death metal assaults are intense and fierce while the utilisation of doomy parts gives more dimension to the music, allowing the artillery fire of hellishly fast parts room to breathe. The momentum of the album is unrelenting with abrasively heavy atmospherics and disdainful instrumentation that really packs a punch. The tightness and variety to be found from Fornicus will certainly impress most extreme metal fans with an approachable production style that is crystal clear, something that might even usher in fans who are less experiences in the extreme metal field.Fornicus are back on top form with their most obliterating, intense and furious album to date. There is clearly tons of potential for them to dominate the extreme metal world with plenty to offer musically, as shown by their diverse blend of sounds, each as riveting and heavy as the last.
