"Czernoboh" is the first and only album from the one man Polish black metal group called Northland. Despite the fact it came out alongside other Polish groups on the Astral Wings label (Infernum, North, Arkona, etc), Northland has no nationalist or nazi overtones to the music or lyrics. The subject matter is purely based on Paganism and ancient folklore. This album did not receive as much notice as other groups from Poland who came out around the same time.
Musically, this could be classified as atmospheric Pagan metal. There are no fast songs and the composition is primarily made up of thick and bassy electric guitar, acoustic guitar and synth chimes. The drums are well recorded and fit the music nicely, keeping things in the mid-tempo range and occasionally slowing things down so that the acoustic guitar and synth have room to breathe. The most notable aspect of this record is the vocals, which are like a very exaggerated Varg Vikernes. Some people say this detracts from the album so much that it becomes unlistenable, but the vocals grew on me after a few listens and I think they fit the music very well.
Themes of nature, Paganism, folklore, and honor are explored on "Czernoboh". The album is interesting in that it is split into two parts. The first half could be considered Pagan metal, while the last half is made up of ambient, clean guitars and a combination of cleanly sung, whispered and spoken vocals. A loose comparison for the last half of "Czernoboh" would be countrymates Perunwit. The 2nd half of the album is very enjoyable, well recorded and a great change from the first half of the album.
Overall this is an album unlike any other you will find from the mid 90s Polish scene. If you can get over the "screamy" black metal vocals you will be rewarded with a captivating and original album that creates a very unique Pagan atmosphere.
