Since 1996, Frozen Shadows have been adding to the growing Canadian metal scene by releasing brilliantly executed, cold French-Canadian black metal... and Hantises is no exception.
The rhythm of the album is relatively the same over the course of 50 minutes. The music utilizes drumming ranging from fast blast beats, to galloping war drums, to slower-/mid-paced tracks. Pair this up with guitar tracks ranging from grainy tremolo picking, to power chord progressions, and all backed up with Myrkhaal's chilling screams, and you have one hell of an album. On the French-titled songs, the lyrics are written in French, giving it a very similar feel to any black metal coming out of France these days. The English-titled songs feature lyrics in English.
Hantises is very well put together. There are 5 full tracks, one instrumental ("Darkness Unfolds"), and a final track which is mostly instrumental and finishes off the record on a somber note ("Towards the Chambers of Nihil"). The production is much better and cleaner than when FS were releasing material on their own label, Sepulchral Productions. And on the first 2000 copies, a bonus cd of their long sold-out demo, Empires de Glace.
I strongly recommend Frozen Shadows' Hantises to anyone who is looking for less-known black metal, or for anyone who considers themself a supporter of true extreme music in Canada or North America.
