Gontyna Kry "The Blood Of Our Fathers" CD Digipack

I'm not sure exactly WHAT happened between 2001 and 2008 but whatever happened changed this band forever and in ways I could have never guessed. Judging from the extreme contrasts of the raw guitars, kind-of-overused keyboards and distant shrieks of their 2001 album and this 2008 death-metal-ish, cleanly produced piece of music, it would seem these are two completely different bands.
So yeah, the music. Imagine a sort of melodic death metal band doing a tribute album for Gontyna and that's pretty much what's going on here. The sound is top notch and the guitars are quite melodic, and even technical, if you compare them to previous efforts. All in all, you can hear every instrument clearly and the vocals are much cleaner too. But please don't take all of this as something bad. Oh no. What I have failed to make clear so far is that this album, this evolution, is completely amazing. While this album might not be ground-breaking for any genre, it sure as hell deserves credit for what it is, a great piece of music, melodic yet extreme, and still, it retains most of what made Gontyna great on the fist place, that would be the folk influences, the nationalistic spirit and the great use of melodies which would seem out of place in any other black metal act (although they seem less out of place now that the band plays a more melodic-death-ish kind of music).
If you love Gontyna Kry for albums like Welowie, I'm not sure this album is for you. If you are in the mood to listen to something quite unexpected, give it a listen.
