Second full lenght album from this Slam Brutal Death Metal from Italy.
Well I certainly wasn't expecting this - Vulvectomy have actually made a pretty decent album. Their demo was a horrendous display of unoriginality and monotony, and while somewhat improved, their debut album wasn't much better. For their sophomore they largely step up their game. The band is still dumb, the song names are still ridiculous ("Blunt Rectal Impalement" is one of many examples) and the samples are still ludicrous - one sample is about unwanted urine leakage. The success of this album is that they have managed to translate their stupidity into fun.
The production is perhaps the biggest shift that Vulvectomy have made for this album. Instead of rough like previous releases, the production is surprisingly polished. It is not an advisable choice for a slam band to go with polished production, but in this case the band uses it to their advantage. Slam isn't a death metal sub-genre that is known for good production - the bad production often brings out the brutality that the bands are attempting to portray. Bolt Thrower, who play a more accessible kind of death metal (which certainly doesn't imply that their music lacks vigour) , chose to go with overly polished production on their Mercenary album. This dragged down an otherwise brilliant release. But for Vulvectomy it totally works - it brings out the simplicity in their music. None of the fun riffs are obscured and the production isn't polished to the point where the whole thing sounds incredibly watered down.
The music here is incredibly simple. While the drums often play at lightning fast speeds, they are programmed. While the guitar work is not very intricate, the guitar player has a good sense of rhythm and his style of playing is fun. There are plenty of slams, a decent amount of memorable riffs and a fair amount of grindcore sections. The slam sections are well executed and always fun (and this is coming from a guy who isn't exactly slam death's biggest fan). The grindcore sections, while not badly done, can occasionally grow a bit tiresome. They aren't played excessively often and are not long in duration, so this doesn't grow to be an overwhelming problem. The songwriting is very straightforward and to the point. While not complicated, it is pretty consistent in its catchiness. The vocals are another big change for this record. On the demo they where absolutely ridiculous. On the debut album they were a bit better but still very lame. Here the vocals are throaty and full.
On their sophomore Vulvectomy are as stupid as they ever where. Their track titles are still silly, their album art is still tiresome sexualized gore that is supposed to be offensive, yet gets nothing more than an eye-roll. And the name of the album, I mean come on, a completely inane attempt at being offensive and brutal. And lets be honest - their music doesn't exactly sound intelligent. The difference is on their previous releases they were stupid and irritating. Here their stupidity translates into fun. This is fun slam that is easy to listen to. It almost seems to not be too far of a stretch to call this slam for people who don't like slam - the production is polished (by genre standards, of course) and it has a dumbed down feel to it. While Vulvectomy certainly aren't reinventing anything with this release, this is still a pretty fun release.
