Few things can beat the feeling of digging up an obscure, forgotten Norwegian black metal-demo from the golden age of the early 90’s. When you’ve spun all the classics to death and you’re tired of bitching about the veterans that are working on way past their prime, you just want to find something you haven’t heard. Something that can take you back to the dramatic heydays of the early 90’s.. Now, THIS is one such release. Seriously, you can FEEL the taste of 1994 just by listening to this! And as far as its obscurity is concerned, I’ll tell you that it’s for both the good and the bad.
Let’s take the bad first. Actually, it’s not just “bad”, it’s a damned SHAME that this demo is so obscure. Cause the music is marvelous. It’s exactly what you would expect from a good band from Norway at this time. All the songs are moving in mid-tempo with a hefty dose of doom-influences. In many places, this actually sounds more like doom metal with black metal-influences, but I would say that it’s black metal at its core. Sonically, Incitatus reminds me a bit of Vargnatt-era Ulver. Although he doesn’t sound as fierce, the vocalist here has got that same high-pitched screaming quality as Garm in several places, and the clean vocals sound a bit alike as well. The drums are also very powerful for a demo and have got much of the same punch as the drums on Vargnatt, but that’s where most of the similarities end. As I said, the music here is very doom-influenced and that shows in the guitars. There are lots of down-tuned chugging riffs and eerie harmonic leads, evoking a really dark atmosphere. We’ve also got some synthesizers here and there adding atmosphere as well. There’s especially one part in the end of the song A Journey to Limbus, where the synths and the guitars join in this great melody that really creates a cathartic and triumphant feeling! Great songwriting!
So why is it for the good that this demo remains so obscure? I don’t really know. Well, I guess it’s always nice to have all these obscure demos that nobody knows about. It creates some mystique around them. In these days, where black metal has reached the masses, it’s great to have these unknown gems that haven’t yet been tainted by the mainstream. Or something like that… Anyway, personally I think this demo should reach a wider audience. It’s got great music and amazing musicianship, so I don’t know. Maybe it’ll reach the surface sometime, hopefully before my tape is worn out.
