Lugubre coined the term "anti human black metal" and to this day they are still the definition of extreme war black metal. The band has carved their own path and fought their way to the top of the extreme underground on their own power.
'Chaoskult - Hymns of destruction' is a compilation featuring 16 tracks, almost 80 minutes of selected tracks from the Lugubre discography. That means not that it's not just all past releases put together on one CD; rather they are selected tracks. And in this case, it's a very good thing, showing an overview of their deadly past. Lugubre started as a primitive, Ildjarn style black metal. The first nine tracks are in this recognizable old Lugubre style. Featured releases are the very first 'Kriich' demo, the 'Promo 2001' and the split tape with Misanthropy (USA). They are quite typical, yet very good drumcomputer black metal for the time (early 2000s). Highly aggressive and primitive hateful black metal.
Track 10, taken from the split CD with Teratism, shows Lugubre with a full lineup for the first time, and changes in the songwriting start to appear. Material is more dynamic, riffs are more melodic, yet the songs are no less aggressive in any way. Unlike so many bands, where "starting to find their own style" means actually "playing more basic standard metal with bland overproduced sound", Lugubre really did develop their own style of strange melodic guitarriffs further with high speed hate. Track 11 through 13 from the 'Resurrection of the beast' promo (limited to only 100 copies and sold out instantly) and track 14 (an unreleased studio pre-recording for the second album) show their best written material to date, the tracks 'Blade to blade' and 'Mustard gas ambrosia'. With "high speed" I really man extremely fast. Drummer Fjildslach, also on the second album, is a wellknown guy who also plays session in some other bands, and for good reason. He hits fast, yet does not loose any volume during the fast parts like most drummers. And no matter how fast, there are still plenty of dynamics in his playing. Sure there are be faster drummers, but not many with this kind of endurance, attack and dynamics.
To prove Lugubre pulls this off not only in the studio, but also in live battles, the album closes with two live in the rehearsalroom recordings. These unedited (!) tracks show the ferocious energy the band. Lugubre is the musical equivalent of an all out bombardment and are truly a force to be reckoned with. This is the album that proves just that.
Since the material spans 12 years from beginning to end, there is going to be difference in soundquality. However since the album was properly mastered, the songs flow well and there are no uncomfortable jumps in levels or spectrum.
The CD comes with an eight page booklet with photos and info about each release on an individual page. Great layout and no money was saved by doing a simple booklet without any info. It's been printed in one single limited edition of only 666 handnumbered copies only, so if it isn't sold out yet, get it now. Highly recommended.
