Supreme Ritual Genocide is the second full-length from Dutch black metallers Lugubre and it’s probably their best to date. This is black metal at it’s purest form with influences ranging from Satyricon to Marduk and Dark Funeral.
Actually, Supreme Ritual Genocide has a lot in common with Nemesis Divina, Diabolis Interium and Wormwood, especially in terms of guitar melodies and songwriting. The drums resemble a lot those of modern Dark Funeral with insanely fast speed. In terms of song structure, almost every track has a slow paced introduction that is followed by intense blast beating and rispid guitar melodies a la Diabolis Interium. Vocals are pretty similar to those of classic Desaster, being completely adequate to the songs (even if they sound a little bit too raw and loud in the mix).
Lyrics are almost all about war themes with touches of anti-christianism but, to be honest, they sound silly sometimes. It’s like Lugubre has just picked up every lyric cliche of black metal to write some of the songs (like Exterminate). Nevertheless, they are pretty standard in terms of black metal composition. Bass just does it’s work serving as a background to the riffs, so there’s nothing really special to comment about it. Production is clean and highlights the amazing guitar melodies and drums which is what Supreme Ritual is all about.
Overall, this is a very good album. Fans of modern Marduk, Dark Funeral and Desaster will certainly enjoy it. There are some great melodies and drum work here. Songs are energetic, creative and full of intensity, never letting the pace go down. Supreme Ritual is not intended to reinvent the style, but is for sure a good pick if you want to remember classics like Diabolis Interium, Plague Angel or Nemesis Divina.
