The idea for Mørketsvind originated with Moscow musician Morbid Detov back in 1993, influenced by instrumental intros to metal albums. He says he'd already begun writing what would later be called dungeon synth back then, and only discovered Mortiis three years later.
Be that as it may, the current surge of interest in this marginal style has suddenly propelled the project from the deep underground to the forefront of the movement in Russia and even beyond. Now, the album Saga of Blood Lands is being released on the specialized Polish label Garavluth Records, the band is sharing the stage with Mortiis himself at the genre's first festival, and their performance goes beyond the arrogant strumming of keys with one finger, presenting a rather comical, yet costumed show with a central plot. The album features classic dungeon synth, with bombastic, sweeping orchestrations interspersed with mysterious interludes and folk elements. The purely instrumental work clearly leans toward pomp, giving free rein to the imagination: here we have the luxury of an elven kingdom, here goblin caves, there a dragon's lair, and here another cliché from a bad 90s fantasy series. It's very difficult to discern any signs of originality in Mørketsvind's music. And yet, it's a well-crafted, atmospheric dungeon record, in which a rather monotonous fairytale tapestry, cleverly broken up into three-minute tracks, doesn't become tiresome by the end.
