What comes to your mind when you think of MORRIGAN musically? Yes, BATHORY – like, epic Metal hymns. And that is what the new album “Headcult” is about again. While the first two albums “Plague, Waste And Death” and “Enter The Sea Of Flames” have not been overwhelming impressive in my eyes (or better ears), Beliar and Balor wisely went into a more hymnic and epic direction with their 2003 album “Celts” again, just like in the last period of MAYHEMIC TRUTH. Wisely, because this is what they are best at. And at times MORRIGAN are even able to top BATHORY (and believe me, I really love BATHORY), especially some of Beliar’s guitar and choir / vocal – melodies / lines are so impressively emotional, it is unbelievable, and also the grim vocals are bare of any criticism. The whole album is, like I said before, a mid – tempo, hymnic opus with slowly, atmospherically played guitars and heavily pounding drums interrupted by single black thrashing attacks. Needless to pick out single tracks, because the quality level is equally high throughout the whole album. Also the layout fits the celitc mythological background that MORRIGAN draw lyrical inspiration from perfectly. So, the ones who complain that this band rips off (epic) BATHORY 200% just keep your fingers from this and obviously future MORRIGAN albums! All others who are into epic Metal: Buy!!!
