Withermoon is a Black Metal band hailing out from California, United States. The band was created back in 2017, featuring 4 members that present a 90’s 2nd wave of Black Metal raw sound.
The band had made its introduction to the underground scene by releasing a demo and a split, giving a glimpse into the music identity they set out to create. «Testament to Our Will» is their debut album released earlier this year through Adirondack Black Mass label. The album is a Testament to 90’s Norwegian Black Metal throughout presenting a very morbid atmosphere. Following classic mid-tempo switches and cold Darkthrone-like melodies it’s everything a Black Metal fan could hope for. Raspy vocals frontrun the record with blast beats getting their fair share. The guitars well composed paint a morbid scenery, reenacting the feeling of old.
The album starts off with the 1 minute instrumental «Echoes from A shallow Grave» which serves its purpose by getting the listener in the mood of what is about to unravel. Coming after are 40 minutes of Black Metal onslaught through 7 trucks. With lyrical themes of Aggression, Suicide and Violence they manage to perfect their message with their music. Cold melodies throughout set the whole foundation for everything else to fall into their place. A great vocal performance is what makes the album’s character and personality. My personal stand-out track has to be «Reason of Existence». A track that made me reminiscent of the scene’s early stages, as if it had been written back in 1991. Production the band took a raw approach to achieve a vintage feeling, without hindering the guitar patterns as everything is audible and distinct. The vocals are tuned up regarding the other instruments making it clear that they choose to put emphasis and the weight of the album in this section.
A very good debut release that is sure to create a following for them within the Black Metal underground among the old -school fans. A record highly recommended as we now await to see what the future holds for them and what path they decide to carve moving forward.
