South America Black / Death Metal. Track 10 Impaled Nazarene cover!!
The somewhat hilarious back-of-the-school-notebook-sketched album cover shouldn't dissuade you from checking out this excellent black/thrash crossover gem. To vehemently disagree with the other review, I think this record stands out from general obscure black metal milieu for a variety of reasons. The riffing on this album is varied and interesting, serving up a good mix of mid-tempo mosh riffs and tremolo riding a good d-beat. I think that the melodic twin-lead duet riffs (like the end of "North Side Satanists") are inspired, and I would love to hear more of this in other black metal releases. There are a ton of great riff ideas sprinkled throughout this record.I think that this album is helped greatly by the production. The album still retains a lo-fi sound appropriate to black metal but without sacrificing the listener's opportunity to hear the very competent rhythm section. However, I do think that the "digital" sounding distortion used on the guitars is one of the factors that prevents this album from building up a sense of "atmosphere" in the black metal sense.Regardless, a solid record leaving me interested in hearing the rest of the band's catalog.
