Chiles Black Metal Band Nigredo debutes with their new Album "Grimoire Timeless Death" and will be released as CD Version, 300 Copies.
On 1 December 2020 Schattenkult Produktionen made some noise with a fabulous triple punch including outstanding releases by Funeralis, Echushkya and especially Shadows Ground. After taking a breath they have now followed up with more great stuff, with the first of the lot coming from Nigredo, not the Greek but the Chilean ones. Their debut full length “Grimoire Timeless Death” is another great addition to the label’s roster and a nice slab of quite traditional black metal ferocity. From the first note onwards Nigredo show that they have the standard slithering, creepy guitar tone down to rights, but add to this with all manner of hellish noises and effects. Most of the songs consist of classic and punishing black metal with maniacal vocals that sound straight out of a nightmare. The singer screams and bellows in deep agony, accompanied by some gripping guitar harmonies. The juxtaposition works wonders and the intensity is ramped up to the max.The music is largely presented at breakneck speeds and is surprisingly atmospheric in places, aided as it is by a healthy dark melodicism and subtler highlights in their arsenal of grim delights. Taking the most aggressive parts of the razor sharp delivery of the best of the mid-90’s Black Metal elite, Nigredo combine elements of some of the genre’s greats but never forget their South-American roots and throw in some very dark and unorthodox harmonies as well.Second wave bands such as these have a special place in my heart and Nigredo have produced an album that works wonders with these base influences. Black metal these days often seems to mostly consist of the ultra-cold and minimal variety, or highly symphonic, or of exploring pastures new and only use black metal as their starting point. Bands that combine aggression with atmosphere in a non-symphonic way appear to be quite few and far between, which is another reason that Nigredo are such a fine listen. The production is organic and harsh without coming across as being too raw. Nigredo play a form of black metal that makes me recall past glories with a nostalgic fondness and everybody looking for a trip to the genre’s roots (but presented with better production values) should not sleep on “Grimoire Timeless Death”. Once again a great find by the ever reliable Schattenkult crew.
