"Disease in Solitude" professionally pressed CD by Resonant Depths Production, 2020. Limited edition.
Nihil Invocation is a young US raw black metal act that has been releasing some truly miserable sounds in the last few years and not that long after their inception in 2016, they released Time and Death, a vile piece of black metal that laid the framework for their future sound , but did nothing to wow the listener with haunting melodies or interesting song composition. The band returns with Deathwalker, who handles all the instruments, minus the drumming, which is handled by Ankath once again. Less than a year after Time and Death, the pair released Disease in Solitude, in which they forge their noxious sound further.Disease in Solitude opens with an acoustic serenade before unleashing a tremolo riff of pure misery, not leaving one moment to think that the sound has not progressed from the previous demo. Variety is the key word here and Disease in Solitude is far more eclectic than its predecessor; with a black feast of more developed riffs, mature song composition, stronger use of effects and a dominating atmosphere of sorrow. Highlights include the spectral "As Dawn's Wind Blows Cold" with a wonderfully mournful horn effect towards the end of the song, "Vampyric Wanderer of a Lonely Land" has a superior song structure, featuring tremolo riffing that will leave you in tears and "...From Fog Below a Setting Sun", a doomy number with the best example of Deathwalker's vocals on the demo and is the perfect way to end the demo.Whilst Disease in Solitude has many more positives than its predecessor, some negatives still remain in the mix. "Descending to the Tomb of Nocturne" and "In the Farthest Distance from Serenity" still suffer from the complaints aimed at Time and Death; repetitive, uninspired and just plain boring, these tracks only drain the essence of misery the other tracks radiate in black majesty. That being said, the production has been carried over from Time and Death and it still sounds as impressively ghoulish here as it does there. The ruins displayed in earnest upon the cover sum up the sound utterly and if one thing can be said of Deathwalker, the morbid soul indeed knows how to present his work aesthetically.Disease in Solitude is a gloomy performance of savage anguish and a massive step forward for Nihil Invocation in its sound. Tormented, bitter and loathsome, Nihil Invocation build upon the last demo and bind themselves to stronger sorcery that would carry further throughout the projects (un)life. That being said, some gripes remain from the previous demo and have, yet still, to achieve the grand conflagration of mournful woe that would become more readily apparent in later releases. In isolation, sickness and hate, the binding of invocation continues, a perpetual wander of shrouded nights, farhest in distance from the deceptions of serenity.
