Nomans Land "Hammerfost" CD

Finally. I have sought this album for a long time. It was pretty much luck that had me come across it; the Gods must’ve guided me to it, for when it comes to Viking black metal, Hammerfrost is a pillar.
If you have trouble taking it seriously under the premise that you find it funny that a Viking metal act could possibly hail from Russia, then perhaps you are in need of a history lesson. I won’t say much, but I will say that Vikings from modern day Sweden settled in what is now Russia. These Vikings were called the Rus. I’ll let you figure out the rest.
Anyways, Noman’s best album to date is filled with purely enjoyable black metal. Melodious, memorable guitar riffs set this album apart from others (their other albums are pretty strong too, but I consider this album to be a staple). The occasional use of keyboards adds a majestic element to the music and of course one must mention the vocals; strong BM rasps effused with deep clean vocals are a point in Noman’s favour.
The music on this album is quite original, though if I had to compare it to another band the first one that comes to mind is Swedish Viking black metal champions, Mithotyn. However there is also an underlying Russian influence to the music, so I would say that it is comparable to a combination of Mithotyn and Alkonost (a Russian pagan metal band).
Hammerfrost is a very strong album. I recommend it. It’s not generic, it’s a breath of the north.
