Obsidian Hooves are a two men death metal machine from Los Angeles / US California and “Illuminating Void” is their second full length. Offering 7 tracks and clocking in just under 47 minutes this album is a disgusting behemoth of filthy and demolishing death metal. Psychotic, aggressive, nasty and disturbing are only a few words to describe this album - and it's not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. Plenty of sinister sounding progressions, a brilliant drum performance and a high intensity throughout the whole playing time make up for an exhausting yet satisfying listen.
The guitars are very well arranged and played with a ferocity that feels as if your flesh is peeled off and the wound is treated with salt. Songs like “Aesthetic Temple” consist of long spun out riffs which drag you drown in its misery while the records proceeds. There is nowhere to run once the gates to the demonic underworld have opened. This album has all the elements we crave in this kind of metal and more, turning this record into a must-have item for the collection of any admirer and connoisseur of the darkened heavy music crafted in the underworld.
After a short intro the slightly dissonant beginning of the opening track warns the listener of the fury that’s about to come, a gruesome death metal onslaught led by the deep and sick growls by Cave Ritual, who is also acting as the drummer and seems to be under some kind of evil spell, blasting his merciless nonstop beats and fills from beginning to end. Once you have survived the opening onslaught you will plunge into the angular nightmare that is “Inception’s Release”. With droning staccato riffs paying scant tribute to the notion of melody, the emphasis here is very much on crafting an atmosphere of frozen torment
Despite the playing being quite sophisticated there are no signs of modernity or alternative elements, just plain old school devastation, enhanced by a more technical approach compared to some of their peers. Both members are proficient on their instruments, and they really gel together to create some outstanding moments on the album. Almost every song on here has sections proving how heavy and intense this album is. Some of the best moments come when order and chaos go hand in hand, and clear structures emerge from a horrifying cacophony of white-hot feedback and funereal percussions.
Some sections do not follow classic structures which make them an even more interesting listen, and each song melds into the next one without losing any of its originality and raw power. When I say this album is very dirty and rough do not make the assumption that I was talking about the production. On the contrary, the production on the album is superb and on point, with everything sounding pretty transparent and dynamic. It is the actual music itself that has kind of a raw and unfiltered aura to it. With “Illuminating Void” Obsidian Hooves have delivered an absolute belter of an album which deserves some attention.
