CD version of the new EP by the Spanish masters of old school Horror Death Metal
The band entered the Moontower Studios in order to record 4 new songs (plus Intro / Outro) which perpetuate their trademark of old school Death Metal settled in their 2 previous full lenght albums released by Razorback Records and Equinox Discos. We assure that this material is a great step towards the creepy grail of the unspeakable Horror Death Metal worship.
Cthulhu fhtagn! Cthulhu fhtagn! Iä! Iä! Shub-Niggurath!
Probably one of the better known Spanish death metal outfits Oniricous enhance their discography (having consisted of two full lengths so far) by an EP. The basis of the music is still a very traditional form of riff laden and crushing death metal with “La Maldición” being different to their previous work only in nuances. In my books this is a good thing as innovation is overrated when it comes to music. The guys have a feeling for good songwriting varying between furious speed attacks and slower, filthy parts that give the whole affair the required dark and brooding atmosphere. The main chords are very stoic and the guitar lines have a certain feeling of monotony. That might sound a bit negative but in combination with the rumbling bass and the straight pounding of the drums the result is a very hypnotic and convincing piece of music. The trademark riffs are repeated over and over again but they are often slightly varied making the tracks sound a bit similar at first but during consecutive listens a lot of small twists can be discovered. One just has to look beneath the simple and basic surface of the music to detect these subtle details. The guys from Oniricous have a great feeling for keeping a steady groove. They know exactly when to slow down the tempo and how to implement a few rhythm changes to ensure a certain factor of freshness. There are some soloing sections but nothing too technical or overblown. Overall the main focus is on delivering raw and filthy tunes triggering memories of the 80s and 90s where such kind of music has often been produced in private garages or cellar rooms. This atmosphere is highlighted by the haunting vocals sounding like if they had been recorded in a crypt. The production is powerful without sounding too modern or sterile. There is a certain level of rawness and filthiness left without sacrificing the clarity of the mix. Each instrument can be heard and even the bass gets a few moments to shine. Rounded off by a nice looking cover artwork “La Maldición” is a great piece of old school death metal and thanks to BlackSeed Productions available in physical form as well.
