Massachusetts one-man-show Orgy of Carrion released their second album in 2016. Obscured Ceremonies Under Hell Moon is an ultra-lo-fi piece I really enjoy, with a unique but hypnotic atmosphere.
There's several interludes throughout the album which don't really go anywhere in particular but are just a kind of grating, metallic sound. These interludes have a bit more weight to them than on Everlasting Blood of Night and I think they're an improvement.
The album progresses with each "segment" between interludes faster, louder, and better than before - the last part of the album is the best, whereas on Everlasting Blood it was the opposite. "Reeking Orb" has the best riff on the album, with a sort of playful almost pirate-y bounce to it; "Leeches" is a really strong finisher with a dramatic climax that feels like ending an album dammit.
There's strong Darkthrone influence on this album, with some of the chord progression really reminding me of "Kathaarian Life Code" - especially the opening song "Rebirth of Evil." Tracks 4 and 7 are both called "Untitled" and both have that weird black-metal-80s feeling to them, the Darkthrone-worships-Hellhammer sound of Panzerfaust.
The mix is shit - and I don't mean that in a good way. This is raw black metal but there's a line between enjoyably lo-fi and just trash. Like it's predecessor, this album has the guitar too low in the mix so you strain to hear it. Everything's drowned under the vocals and drum machine - this drum machine is so loud and obnoxious. But it's not inexcusable. This is something I liked enough to pay for.
This is a strong album and it's cover perfectly captures the minimalistic, eerie-emptiness atmosphere of the music. Energetic riffs and the bands signature wailing-ghost vocals are delivered in a lengthier album with heavier and better interludes, fast-tempo songs and some mid-tempo 80s-sounding ones, it's altogether an improvement over last year's album and a really good piece on it's own. The mix sucks but the music is good enough to buy anyway, and I would ultimately give this a thumps up.
