While the meaning behind a name like Pork True is unclear, what IS clear is that their newest release, “The Indestructible I” is dauntingly impressive. The sheer number of riffs, transitions and tempos throughout is incredible (probably several albums worth!). One will count no less than seven distinct passages in first strike ‘Obliteration Til’ Egoism’. And the count adds up throughout the song cycle, culminating in dozens of well-crafted ideas that fit perfectly together. Even when humbly moving between simple slamming riffs and skank beats there is a fluidity and naturalism that makes “Indestructible” a very cerebral work. Even more impressive is that the band never physically met to record it! No doubt group mastermind Gaspar de Valle has a vision in marshaling such prowess over great distances.
It is hard to point out specific highlights because the band doesn’t let anything wear out its welcome. ‘Fading Out Idolatry’ is memorable because it ups the brutality by sparing drum blasting and open riffing, while the title track possesses a sinister melody alongside pinch-harmonics. The choice to keeps the songs short and to point creates a building sense of urgency, which climaxes precisely at the end, with the awesome Immolation inspired ‘Cannibalized Fleshyard.’ This is a collection that requires closer listening than most of its brethren.
However, there are a few things that blunt what I believe to be elite death metal. Chief among them are the somewhat limp production itself, which partially declaws the excellent music. There isn’t united sense of atmosphere or aggression, but that could be remedied with some artistic use of effects. I also think that the vocals could use additional variation at times. However, the band has identified that it is not concerned with creating stereotypical music, and the problem may lie with me, who may be caught up in a world of clichés. Still, if Pork True continues to create music this ridiculously ambitious and effective all criticisms might be moot. A must listen.
