When I first heard this album I was stunned. It was immediate. Black metal coming from a deep, non-physical place. When I listened to this I didn’t feel that instant calling from the frost covered lands of death which black metal so often provokes. It’s dark but the rest is abstract, it’s open to the interpretation and feeling each one gets from the listen. Besides, it would be difficult to take a typically northern European inspiration while living in Portugal.
Production wise, I had serious doubts if there was even a bass. I didn’t hear it at all but I also didn’t miss it a bit. The thickness of the guitars involves us with a dry and harsh cloth which exhales its despair and decadence onto our skin and inevitably causes us to sweat. This is the contrast that distinguishes the sounds vomited by the guitars. The drums play their part in a discrete platform and slightly buried under the protagonist guitars, which are without a doubt the driving force of the entire atmosphere created by the music. Gonius Rex’s vocals occupy the other spot on the podium and, despite the fact that it isn’t too grating, it drags on in concordance with the slower parts of the compositions, sometimes recurring to subtle effects that exacerbate the threat in his words or even to demented moans that look like they come from the most unbridled melancholic facet present in all of us.
The song structure is unconventional and the pace, despite varying throughout, rarely gets to high levels. It’s through the muddy trudging that the music causes impact, treading lonely paths of melancholic sad riffs heavily and languidly interrupted by interludes of putridity, being the beginning of “The Hunger From Hell” a prime example of this last attribute. However, and given the concept of the album, I think the transition between songs could've been better handled.
From time to time I come back to this album and it always sounds slightly different. The black metal production makes the riffs come to the mind indistinctively but perceptible to the anima, simultaneously becoming a memorable experience though never repetitive. It’s always possible to detect secondary melodies that weren’t there the last time and won’t be there the next.
