Congregants, we are gathered here once again, to witness a sight most vile, yet divine; to revel in the glory of the blessed fecal gods of the heavenly perverse. It is time to bear witness to another offering of audial putridity, by the fiendish gods of blasphemous wrath. In a surprise that can only be described as akin to divine intervention, Vermont’s purveyors of Blackened Death Thrash from the gutter, Shitangel, have finally bestowed upon us their latest sermon of perverted, drunken debauchery, that shall be force-fed to every loyal member of this reeking congregation, as the angels above we’ve all turned out backs on, weep with shame and disgust. Praise be, the name of shit.
As can be expected by anyone who’s been lucky enough to have stumbled upon the growing gutter demon that is Shitangel thus far, Brown Bath Resurrection is a vicious hammering of voracious riffs, swung with the same sledgehammer, encrusted with the blood and brain matter leftover from the 2022 full-length, Shithead Metal, with the same primitive force, veering off into different styles with seamless ease, like an intoxicated driver with enough wherewithal to avoid crashing into your local convenient store. Starting off with the 2023 single, Something Reeks of Violence; a rusty knife to the throat, immediately carving with precision, as the opening riff, rife with the ghastly, black, Thrashing tone of Aura Noir or Desaster, and the spastic intensity of early Impaled Nazarene, protruding beneath an array of clubbing blast-beats, as Mary, Mother of Shit once again showcases her range, dropping hints of classic Heavy Metal style highs, rearing above a sea of vomitous snarls.
The stylistic range of the band as a whole comes into play throughout this filth-ridden beast, dipping into Punk and Hardcore territory on occasion, as first displayed on Thy Divine Cuckold, with a sweet, winding main riff, that resembles something out of the early Negative Approach playbook, which then takes a nosedive into Archgoat-like hammer blasts, flanked by a reaming chord. Then comes Convent Cunt STDs, opening with a slow, crawling riff and staggering drum beat, reeking with a vomitous, Profanatica-esque aura, that permeates throughout the track, as it takes different turns, from vicious blasts, back to that slow, crawling tempo. The Punk influence returns for Infectifixion, with a random heap of group chants, peppered over more relentless blasts. The aptly titled Audial Carnage then follows, and carries over the ferocity of its predecessor, not letting up one bit, riddled with more staunch, but catchy riffage.
A familiar hymn, Whiskey Drunk and Fucking Angels makes a triumphant return for this EP as well, beefed up with a thicker tone and molded into even more of a relentless hatefuck of blasphemous proportions. Things then cap off with a pair of covers, with a rendition of the Gehennah classic, Beat That Poser Down, and the 90s Death Metal gem, Uglier and More Disgusting, by Dellamorte. The latter of which not only cementing itself as one of my favorite Shitangel tracks, but also serving as the first half of a bludgeoning one-two punch, as an untitled hidden track then follows, bringing things to a horrific end, with an emphatic proclamation of war by Mary, helmed by one last outburst of voracious riffs and breakneck snare abuse. And so ends another deplorable sermon, hurling wads of spit and buckets of feces into the faces of every god inhabiting the ether, through decadent carnage of the most ungodly degree, spreading the perverted gospel as far as it will go, hopefully converting many more sick fucks along the way. That’s exactly what this review aims to do! So, grab some beers, kick back, put on a SHIT eating grin and indulge in the filth-ridden fuckery that is Shitangel. The gospel will spread far and wide among the USBM scene and beyond very soon! That, I’m certain of.
