The Norwegian folk-black-metal solo project SORGSVART does not give up its self-chosen outsider position even after its return after about 16 years and presents seven new songs on "Gardar Og Grende", which once again transport the familiar sound quite unwieldy.
Sorg, who manages everything on his own, lacks neither ideas nor passion, as becomes clear at first listening, and the melancholic undertone typical of his project also resonates in his idiosyncratically arranged, mostly six to ten minute long compositions. "Gardar Og Grende" could therefore hardly be further from "business as usual" in some respects.The enthusiasm with which the musical Hans-Dampf-in-allen-Gassen has made his recordings is reflected not least in multi-layered vocal arrangements, and his flute tones in no way rob the music of its metallic substance. So the folk character is a halfway serious one, and some choir singing, such as in the second song "Frå bakom Bergafjedlet onda Tjuvandehidlar i løyndo dei bur", is reminiscent of Storm's monumental debut. Compared to their straightforward hymns, however, the compositions of SORGSVART can be described as progressive.Abteilung Attack, on the other hand, reigns supreme on the fifth track "Alt Rivna!", whose concise riffing pays homage to Satyricon, while in between pure chaos seems to break out, then a turn to the epic surprises – no, there is really no lack of variety on this album!There were quite a few points of criticism as far as the implementation of Sorg's wealth of ideas is concerned, but the stubbornness with which the Norwegian realizes his ideas also distinguishes SORGSVART in a recognizable way. And although several melodies on this album remind us that very own folk black metal from Norway is at best in a class of its own (Windir, Myrkgrav, Ulvhedner...), SORGSVART still has all kinds of anarchic elements in 2026, which suddenly break through. Nobody has to love that, but the creative maverick has undoubtedly earned respect for his uncompromising attitude.This also characterizes the thematic focus of the album, which with its idealization of self-sufficiency and homeland idyll courageously spits into the soup of most Internet ideologues these days.
