Death/black metal can come in different forms. You have the strain rooted into Incantation’s sound (take for instance Antediluvian or Maveth), you have those who worship at the altar of Blasphemy (Hellfire Deathcult, Weregoat) and there are those who cling on to the Swedish style like Sacramentum and Necrophobic. Italy’s Terrorsaw have actually found their own niche in a way though, and they showcase it in good fashion on their first full length “Slaughterrrites”. Not a typing error, the title does have three r’s in the middle. You know, mimicking a chainsaw, RRRRRRRRRR!!! Nifty, eh?
After a short intro that features the sound of a chainsaw (of course) Terrorsaw launches into a black/thrash metal stained brand of primitive death metal, not quite unlike Nunslaughter meets Pestilence’s “Consuming Impulse” album. Fast pounding percussion and mid tempo parts alternate with sharp leads and barked growling vocals while occasional flecks of black metal iciness appear as well. The general feel of the songs stays thrashy in execution, it kinda brings to mind Possessed but on steroids. I didn’t expect anything less from members of excellent black/thrashers Extirpation. The riffing throughout the album has the names Destruction and Kreator all over it, giving the songs the right kind of hectic delivery this kind of music deserves. It’s got power and menace oozing out of every orifice and it’s raw, manic energy will have you raging like a lunatic. The energetic production firmly puts the (probably barbed wire) crown upon the end result, making for a snarling beast of a release.
Looking at the album as a whole, I dare to make the claim that this lot is on it’s way to creating a sound all of their own. The elements may be familiar but as a whole the band sounds like it has it’s own identity. Terrorsaw has all the potential of becoming an underground titan and I’m looking forward to this album’s follow up.
