Produced by Trouble. Recorded at Alpha Sound Services, Geneva, ILL. Tracks 7-10 were recorded between 1991 and 1992.
I’m starting to wish Trouble would stop dicking around an just release another kickass album. There’s simply nothing very interesting about Unplugged, and I’m surprised that the band thought it was a good idea to play acoustic versions of their songs, when they certainly aren’t suited to the style. They probably got lazy and decided to do this over, I don’t know, write new music? The previously unreleased tracks sound like mundane b-sides from Simple Mind Condition, which probably isn’t far from the truth. What really disappoints me is how subdued the material is; even the non-acoustic songs show few signs of being metal. I know Trouble are certainly no strangers to experimentation, but this time it comes at the compromises their identity. You won’t find the signature crushing, yet catchy riffs you’d expect from this band. Waiting for the Sun is definitely the strongest offering, with its scorching solo, one of the only moments harkening back to what Trouble are known for. Eric Wagner’s vocals also sound great on this track, but the guitars are what I’d call the highlight. Wagner competently delivers, in general, although not with as much conviction and power as he has in the past. On the other hand, the acoustic versions of songs just end up seeming rather pointless. There’s nothing about them that makes them more interesting than their original versions, and as I said earlier, the songs don’t exactly sell themselves to an acoustic overhaul. Sure, Flowers was a pretty mellow track to begin with, but this version seems stripped down and lacking in personality. The instrumentation is solid but restrained. There is certainly no denying the skill of guitarists, Bruce Franklin and Rick Wartell, but I’d much rather hear them be pounding out their classic doom riffs than listen to the lazy sounding work here. I look forward to hearing the next Trouble full length, because I still whole heartedly believe this band has potential to release something worthwhile again. Just not this time.
