*The version reviewed here is the reissue cd of Kneel Before the Master's Throne.
When I hear “2nd wave German black metal”, crap like Nargaroth and Moonblood comes to mind and I prefer to pass on such things, but this reissue of the ep that was originally unleashed in ’96 somehow redefined the term “German quality” for me. What you can hear on this release in no bullshit black metal, done by people who can actually write cool riffs that don’t sound pointless and monotonous, but actually interesting with various rhythm changes and decent sound quality which has its rawness and doesn't sound overproduced.
The drums have a strong presence and aren't pushed to the background and the drummer knows both how to terrorize the listener’s ears on high temp a la Blasphemy fast parts and mid-paced parts without sounding boring and monotonous. The bass can be heard quite well throughout the whole release (which is a highly appreciated rarity in this kind of music) and the vocalist doesn't sound like a dying raven, and while still sounding 666% black metal and angry as hell, he sounds decent and most of the time the lyrics can be understood just from hearing. Some occasional growls can be heard here as well and even a Celtic Frost-like “ough!”. Some early Sodom and Celtic Frost inspirations can be heard here, but overall this band has its own unique touch and sound, and sounds great for what it is.
Another two things that were added to this reissue version is killer black/white artwork done by Chris Moyen himself and a rehearsal recording from ’95 that features 4 out of the 5 songs form this ep. These are both good and bad news in my opinion since the artwork looks great, but these songs sound somehow weaker on the rehearsal, but no big deal since the studio versions prove that this material is strong as steel!
