The more I listen to old black metal, the more I hate most of the modern Norwegian variety. It's watered down through too much production, which I suppose was a necessity since there's only so long recording in the garage is going to cut it. But seriously does it even need to exist as it once was? Let it die so we can still enjoy it. You've heard all the greats and the legends, but out of any, Urgehal was probably the best of them. After the death of frontman Trondr Nefas in 2012, however, it seemed like it was sadly over.
Do ye not believe? This new one is after a hiatus of about 7 years (not including an EP and split), and even more importantly it was built on mythological lost riffs that Trondr finished as a follow-up to 2009's "Ikonoklast," which was well received by most. All they needed was to fill in the void left by him through the vocals and the world would be complete. Thus, "Aeons in Sodom" was finally birthed. Born? Berned? I don't know, past tense of birth, whatever.
Honestly I forgot what band this was when I first received the promo because the cover is JUST AWFUL. So awful I didn't pay attention to the logo. It's one of those covers that seems so very evil at first but the more you look at it, the worse it becomes. Is it me or is Satan's head not built out of Craft's artwork from "F the Universe?" Anyway, aside from that, this album completely tears in the classical sense. The riffing is testament to excellency in black metal, without worrying about the garbage-can-tape-recorder aesthetic most bands use these days to still seem koovoolt. Add to that vocals by Niklas Kvarforth, Nocturno Culto, Nattefrost, and others who have been instrumental in the genre, and you have a definite RIP in stone that will never wear in the weather for our lost friend Trondr. Is it beyond your dreams? No, definitely not, in fact it's largely typical, but as a final death gasp to one of the greatest original black metal bands it's core material, for sure. Thanks to the great Season of Mist for putting this together, it's overall a wonderful collection that only has the fault of representing itself as-is.
