Swedish death metal by way of Nizhny Novgorod, Wombripper is Russia's answer to the recent rash of HM-2 driven death metal bands. Featuring current and former members of Resurrection and 7 H.Target, the band's second release is a four track EP called Infected Tomb.
As far as rollicking, punchy death metal goes, Wombripper is pretty apt at their own brand of Entombed worship. The guitars have that crunchy, crushing tone that the entire scene was built around, and the vocals offer a deep, throaty bark that sound similarly nostalgic. The riffs are solid and pummeling; mostly consisting of rumbling, catchy runs and thunderous chord strikes with just enough lead licks to spice things up. The drummer moves between upbeat double kicks and the occasional blasts with an admirable performance, though the snare is extremely loud and clanky.
Wombripper's sound may be derivative, but it's meant to be. This is crunchy, destructive Swedeath worship from the tone to the riffs to the pummeling nature of the music. The production is solid, offering a thunderous, bass heavy approach that allows the riffs and throaty vocals to take center stage. Fans of Entombed and Dismember take note, Russia is finally tapping into your scene.
