This second release from Wulffengard, is a compelling evolution from the project’s rehearsal demo, revealing an artist intent on weaving further intricate contrasts into a coherent sonic narrative.
“Remains of a Howl in the Dark…” balances raw aggression with surprising melodic romanticism. The blend of punk-rock-inflected patterns and black metal ferocity creates a dynamic, almost paradoxical listening experience. The percussion is dense and chaotic, driving the momentum while remaining shrouded in an aura of obfuscation that enhances the lo-fi aesthetic. Over this backdrop, the vocals are unrelentingly abrasive and primaeval serving as a counterpoint to the melodic guitar lines.
The EP is bookended with purely instrumental tracks, highlighting Wulffengard’s ability to craft saccharine guitar-driven introspective and mournful soundscapes, providing a stark contrast to the more fiery tracks in between. Compared to the raw rehearsal material, the shift here is striking, while the harshness remains a central pillar, the newfound melodicism gives the EP a more contemplative edge.
