This album was the first release full-length released by ...and Oceans, and I got it with the double-pack including their second full length. The second album shows they matured a bit, but their second album is not the target of this review. Here we have mediocre guitar riffs that don't really go anywhere, but the keyboards run in and form up huge melodies, held by the vocals, in four different languages- Finnish, Norweigan, English and French. They have some powerful lyrics, as well. An overall review of the album would have me saying "its good, but the band needed.. something."But here, in detail, to show exactly what they needed- examine the track Je Te Connais Beau Masque. It opens with a little plucking, an overall catchy drum beat, and HUGE use of keyboards to synth everything. Now their second release balanced teh use of keyboards with stronger riffs, AWESOME drum beats, and lyrics I could actually understand, but here they seem to let the keyboards just power thru everythign else. Roughly 1:10 into the song, the speed changes up and more leverage is givin from the drumming and riffs, but not much. It seems as if we're here to hear keyboards and great vocals, with drums, bass and guitarwork that are just kind of... there. Now I'm sure that point seems to be coming on extremly hard, but it dosn't effect the overall sound enough for me to care! Where the riffs to take place, and the kit provides uber-badassness, they do so in such a way that makes you think "Wow, what happened to Am God and Cypher?"What happened, is the band is constantly going through a change. No two albums of theirs are anywhere near being the same. The keyboards form extremely slow, almost dark melodies in spots, here. In the next album everything is blended perfectly. After that they go into a creepy industrial thing, then a "Techno" take on metal. They were all good, and the band will always be good, or so I think. This is a great showing of skill, and it proves the band dosn't have to do the same thing every year to be good. Get it- don't regret it.
