When I last checked in with Swedish Blodsrit, it was in conjunction with their excellent 2007 release Hinterland. Since then they have re-recorded their debut album, and enjoyed a short but absurd burst of media attention, when guitarist Yxmarder (literally “Axe-murderer”) was fired from his teaching job because of his involvement with the band. Shortsighted school board decisions aside, this controversy was probably the most attention Blodsrit have ever received from the press, always existing in the periphery of the proportionally large Swedish black metal scene.
Blodsrit have probably never reached any notably level of fame because of an oversaturation of Swedish black metal. It’s certainly not because of any lack of craftsmanship; the musicianship and production of Diktat Deliberi is pristine. At the same time, the atmosphere that colored Hinterland has taken a backseat to straight-forwards mid-paced black metal, only spiced up with a slight dash of acoustic guitars.
As a result, the album is filled with solid songs, but nothing to set it apart from the crowd. The riffing is good, the clean singing parts are awkward, and it sounds exactly like any other middle of the road black metal band with some years of experience on their backs. This is a shame, as it feels like wasted potential from a band who have shown that they are capable of penning interesting music. Worse yet, the band is reeling dangerously close to that dreaded state of genericism.
At the end of the day, Diktat Deliberi is a good slab of Swedish black metal, but nothing more than that. If you simply want an acceptable production and decent songwriting, this might fill your quota just fine. Just don't expect to be blown away, unfortunately Blodsrit will not be shaking any foundations.
