The next dose of high quality metal out of Greece comes from Athens based outfit Archemoron. They have always been pretty consistent in putting out new albums every three or so years, and their newest one is titled “Flagellum I”. Consisting of seven tracks and 49 minutes of playing time this one is an intense affair and you should give it enough time. This is an album that warrants your exclusive attention when it’s on, otherwise you’re cheating yourself. It’s the kind of clandestine mindfuck that catches you after numerous listens, softening your brain into thinking it’s less uniquely affecting than it really is before it decides to completely change your assessment. That is not to say that we are talking about exaggeratingly progressive or complex music, as most patterns to be found here are nothing too much out of the ordinary. Also most songs carry a very melody driven vibe. However, most of the harmonies and all the changes going on within some of the tracks need a bit to get fully appreciated. Where Archemoron hit all the notes is in their ability to bring out something that’s utterly epic, very dark at times but also pretty accessible. The music just comes together so well from beginning to end, which speaks volumes about the band's compositional talent.Songs like the 8:47 minutes long “When Blades Shape our Feelings” prove to be a ferocious yet measured delivery that captures the excellent qualities of black metal. Riffs combine organically with the frantic drumming that pull you into its mirky soundscape. The vocals have a chanting kind of approach, with singer Meleager roaring and screaming like a wounded bear, lending the music a somehow slightly punkish feeling as a result. In combination with the often traditional and folky sounding lead guitars this makes up for a very interesting mix. Archemoron have put a lot of emphasis on making the whole album a varied affair throughout. Some of the soloing would not even feel out of place on albums by bands like e.g. Iron Maiden, and there is a strong pagan influenced mood going on.While the onslaught of aggression is contrasted with mesmerizing and indeed relaxing sections, the transcendency is done wonderfully with a fluidity that remains consistent throughout, giving a balanced and well-rounded listen. The gorgeously somber guitar work and haunting vocals certainly leave an impression, and like mentioned above consecutive spins will allow the album to spread its magic and get the listener fully immersed. After two or three rounds you will remember certain sections as those harmonies and the way Archemoron construct their songs have a somewhat hypnotical effect. The drumming is tight and precise, without being pushed too much into the foreground. The instrumentation is flawless, without the musicians ever losing themselves in redundant wankery.“Flagellum I” comes with a fantastic production as well. Very clear and transparent while having a nice punch this is exactly like modern metal should sound like. The mix is dynamic, with the lead guitars sounding bright whenever they get the spotlight. The cover artwork has a somewhat traditional feeling to it, further enhancing the overall picture. Archemoron surely are a band to keep an eye on as I am sure there is more to come from them. If classic melodic black metal with some unique attributes sounds like your cup of tea you need to check this album out.
