Polish band Cortege are out with the album "Vandari", and progressive metal is how I would categorize the music explored on this production. It is an extreme variety of the form we get here, and one that comes with high pace and high intensity runs of the kind you would expect from a band with a more extreme orientation. The vocals are of the harsh variety too, albeit in this case they aren't all that disruptive in nature albeit having a bit of a primal character to them. The more defining aspects of this album, apart from a variety that see them include side steps into thrash metal as well as what is borderline doom metal, is the liberal array of unusual and quirky guitar riff and rhythm patterns, combined with both subtle and more up front alterations in pace and intensity. While not similar in style or sound there is a similarity in nature here to the kind of exploits a band like Voivod built a career around. If you tend to have an affection for a more quirky and off kilter variety of extreme and arguably progressive metal, getting familiar with this album should be quite the rewarding experience.
