This is a band shrouded in mystery. One by releasing this in 7" format only (limited 666) and two by only adding their names simply as A. and M. Which is to believe that this is a side project of more well known bands. By browsing around you will find out that this is a side project by very well know musicians indeed. A stands for Judas Iscariot main man Andrew Jay Harris whos also well know for bands like Krieg, Nargaroth, Maniac Butcher, Sarcophagus and Weltmacht. M stands for M.K who have been beating drums in bands like Krieg, Katharsis, Deathcult and Azaxul. So with that I mind what can we except from Desolation Hymn. Well its black metal in a very basic form. For the most part, they set a mid pace speed. But at the end of the second track 'Despairing', speed it up to a blast beat. The guitars are layered. With a background rhythm and a leading segment. Using very basic tremolo strums. Similar to Graveland style of riffing. In any case this is why the bass is barely noticeable, because the guitars are more the focal point. The drums are very plain but fitting as well. Using minimal fills and double bass. ‘Purgatory Despairing’ summed up, equals an excellent EP with only 2 songs to date as a band. That is the problem because 'Despairing' is exceptionally decent. And 'Purgatory' is a little bit above average. The only annoying outlook is all the cymbals have absolutely no ring. So during slow parts it sounds kind of like a dead mute. The more likeable aspects of this short EP would be the ability to make very basic music that is dark, catchy and very relistenable. That also has an audible and non-scratchy production.
