Though the debut LP from Polish black metallers Diabolical Fullmoon, The Pagan Wolves Will Rise Again sounds like the work of experienced masters. Reverent enough to satisfy the "trve kvlt" gatekeepers and novel enough to please the more open-minded, this tape surely proves its mettle for even the most elitist within the genre.
As is the case with many of Poland's current bands, there are plenty of quasi-medieval keyboards heard throughout the seven songs. I often grow weary of keys in black metal, but it's hard to get bored of these when they are so well-developed and thought-out. Rather than plinking along with the guitar melody or simply outlining chord progressions, these keys provide the main melody for most of the songs. This compositional intent also allows the band to introduce their record with a tone-setting dungeon synth introduction, without having to devote an entire track to it. The smoothness of the transition into the "song" part of "Fallen" is laudable, and demonstrates the band's commitment to thoughtful arrangement.
Even the weaker keyboard parts, like those heard on "In Wallachia" or "Lord of the Underworld," are more than made up for by the strength of the other instruments. Many of these songs simply drone on one chord from start to finish, but the riffs and rhythm lines still follow a deliberate arc that carries through the track. The drums are nothing to write home about (I had to double-check that they were real, as several songs make them sound a bit mechanical) but they serve their purpose well, and I do have a fondness for more midtempo black metal even if breakneck speed is the genre's bread and butter.
The vocal performances, though far from varied, are a high point also. Regrettably, the 2020s are an era of bedroom black metal, meaning that even on otherwise strong releases the vocals can often sound weak or unconvicted. Strzygoń delivers each line in a back-of-the-throat hiss that burns and bristles with pure evil.
Pagan Wolves is altogether one of the strongest true black metal releases I have heard in recent years. Its triumphant vision of Slavic pagan lands is as inspiring as it is bleak, and it stands with the true black metal in opposition to all that is sacred and holy.
