After a number of demos, EPs and split releases, ‘Eternal Funeral Cries’ is the first full length album from Adelaide black metal project Entsetzlich. Over the course of the last ten years main man Azathoth has created some truly disconcerting music, and the eight tracks that comprise ‘Eternal Funeral Cries’ are no exception.
In keeping with previous Entsetzlich releases, a feature of the album is the constant shifting in mood from track to track; not so much light and shade as different shades of blackness and bleakness. ‘Eternal Funeral Cries’ is by no means an easy listen (this is underground black metal after all!) but critically, the album stands as a very cohesive piece of work with the contrasts from song to song actually adding to their impact. The weird and unsettling ambience of Contemplating The End Of Life and Curse The Abyss Part 1 are stark counterpoints to the vicious, arcane black metal assaults like Mesmerized By The Infinite Void, in which Azathoth utters ghastly death croaks over furious shards of razor-sharp guitar riffs. Elsewhere Condemned To Failure is downright eerie while the remorseless The Cold Wind Rages Through The Dying Forrest creates an atmosphere of utter desolation. A raw and reverent cover of Judas Iscariot’s From Hateful Visions rounds out the album nicely, but my personal favourite is On The Path Towards The Funeral Gates which has just a very faint whiff of elder gods Celtic Frost, and features guest vocals by a certain Erghal and drums by Holokhaosto of Brazilian outfit Furor Volturno, with whom Ensetzlich shared a split EP last year.
‘Eternal Funeral Cries’ is a strictly limited release (500 hand-numbered CDs via Death Cult Records or Pagan War Distro and, in true underground kvlt fashion, 100 cassettes with different artwork via Wolfsvuur Records), so you’d best be quick if you want to immerse yourself in Entsetzlich’s morbid tales and apocalyptic visions.
