Impressive debut full-length album of the Spanish horde Helde, seven intense and absolutely fast tracks in a true old-school way is what they offer us with "Suaren Gerizpea", for fans of the nineties Norwegian madness, totally ruthless and devastating, a fucking dagger in your heart!! Released on CD by Negra Nit limited 500 copies

First album of this veteran Basque black metal band in the Scandinavian 90’s style. The fog, the cold, and the dampness arm these songs that will pierce you like an ice floe. Like visiting the forests of that beautiful and magical land.

After a 2013 split with fellow Spanish black metal act The Somberlain, Basque Country’s Helde return with their debut full length album, Suaren gerizpea. The band’s split featured two tracks of cold and harsh black metal, largely inspired by Pure Holocaust era Immortal, which left me curious as to how the band’s sound would translate onto a full length album.
While the band still brings a lot of that second wave, frostbitten anger to the fold, Suaren gerizpea is more acerbic and unrelenting than before. This could be accented by the addition of Jorge Azofra on drums, who provides a pulverizing and inexorable backbone to the music. Merging second wave histrionics with heavy handed blasts, not to forget just a dash of acerbic death metal, Helde’s sound is heavy as hell. The guitars bring cold trem riffing with a bit of swaggering power chord progressions. The vocals are rabid and raspy shouts, seething in venomous hatred.
All things combined, the music blasts along so frenetically it seems to grind at times, giving the likes of Anaal Nathrakh and Killgasm a run for their money. Despite the acerbic nature of the music and the vitriolic presentation , a few moments of mid-tempo pacing emerge during “Garaitezinen requiema” and some melodic minor key patterns are displayed during “Sasikume”. These fleeting moments allow the fiery trem riffing and blasting drums to seem all the harsher upon their return.
Boasting a solid, clear production, Suaren gerizpea should find a fine home alongside classic Immortal worship bands like Old Wainds and Tsjuder. Released on CD through Negra Nit Distro and as an independent digital album by the band, this is one of the better Pure Holocaust tinged albums to reach my ears this year. The band’s debut split left me wanting more and Suaren geripea delivers.
