Descripción After three demos, Finnish black metallers Faustian Pact have finally evaded obscurity enough to deliver a full length record.
Ice cold guitars and primal drumming enters with crystalline synths and ambient spoken sampling before the harsh screams join the marvellously atmospheric yet piercingly abrasive Black Metal destruction. There are some excellent grooves within the rhythm section while the totally gorgeous side of the music remains strong, so does the obliterating bleakness of the extremity, totally captivating and all-consuming with a ferociously melancholic undertone to the music. Finland has always been able to churn out artists that are awe-inspiringly unique, cold and possess the real black metal flame, Faustian Pact is no exception with ludicrously intense songs that shake you to your core with the finesse and grandiose soundscapes like no other. Medieval vibrancy and otherworldly riffs intertwine so beautifully to conjure true magnificence in the form of ten pieces of carefully constructed and interwoven ambient prowess.
With a cinematic feel to most of the instrumentals (especially the synths), one might be deluded to believe the guitars and drums would lack impact of high-velocity aggression but this blizzard of Finnish might certainly lacks neither, nor do the vocals represent anything other than an untamed maniac howling at the moon. While there are many bands whom perform effective worship of predecessors, this record feels like something totally new and exciting while not necessarily straying too far from traditions within both black metal and dungeon synth, which makes it all the more interesting. Battle-hardened atmospherics are something that can be hard to deliver in such a marvellous fashion, but this is a fantastically driven and mystical release that truly hits all the right spots to take you into the castle quarters before storming out onto the battlefield. The cymbal work even manages to sound like swords hitting armour while the guitars and vocals pierce you like spears, all swathed in a layer of keyboards which only further the dungeon-dwelling soundscapes, presented with an effective yet minimal production, keeping things raw but ultimately very clear.
This album will haunt all whom listen in a manner most bizarre due to its blend of rivetingly aggressive savagery and equally bold glistening tranquility, each component consuming you with a demand for undivided attention while playing. The folkish touches add some excellent use of melody and diversity to the songwriting approach and fit the mould of medieval black metal barbarity perfectly. A truly astonishing record that surpassed all expectations tenfold.
