Oracle spoke about Hatefrost and his split with Wolfenburg not so long ago (rec here). Unlike him, however, I remember Horde very well and some of the material is piling up on my shelf. Why is it piling up? Because I don't hurry back to these recordings, but it's not like the name of this project keeps popping out of my head.
I first started "Darkness Surrounds the Frozen Eternity", the second full-length in their portfolio, in my beloved car on a rather hot day. Hoping that this "furious frost" would cool me down a bit. And I'll admit that something blew and spat out a few icicles, but it didn't blow my mind. This material is nothing spectacular or groundbreaking and is really just a repetition of patterns. Simple basement black metal that pays homage to the Finnish school of playing. The riffs are cooling and stink of rawness (of course, heard a million times before somewhere) as they should be, and the vocals only accompany it. I don't know why the esteemed colleague from the editorial team was picking on this vocal. It's really good and the regurgitated stomach contents only add to the charm. So there's no sleaze, but don't count on fireworks either. The only thing that didn't suit me in all this was the drums, which at times could sound quite artificial. Which is strange, because the booklet mentions a certain Arjan, who was responsible for the drums. Maybe my hearing is just failing?
If you want to cool down in something stress-free, reach for this album. It may not be particularly memorable, but it's correct enough that there's no point in hanging dogs on it. A good average.
