The first glance at the cover and I have the impression that DARKTHRONE has released a new album in the old style, but nothing could be further from the truth. Despite the visual flair reserved for Norwegians, Poles are responsible for this release. HATEFROST has been around since 2013, and has been spitting out their work since 2016. One of them (a split with WOLFENBURG) was covered in our pages. I’m very curious about the new album, but judging by their previous achievements I’m unlikely to be disappointed. So let’s find out what we are dealing with on the new material.

The introduction may be short, but what’s there to write about? 'Darkness Surrounds the Frozen Eternity’ is the second album in HATEFROST’s output, which features seven tracks with a total duration of over thirty-nine minutes. The material opens with a very atmospheric Intro, and despite its mellow disposition, there are moments that give quite a dose of anxiety. Next enters black metal, the kind I like: simple raw, cold and rooted in the early nineties. It’s melodic, but the melody doesn’t impose itself on the listener and, above all, it’s not sugarcoated. Darkness pours out in every bar. Fast and dynamic parts make black metal flow with the bloodstream, staying in the memory for a long time. The rhythms are simple but catchy and, most importantly, somehow evoke sentiment, by making me associate the sound with early bands from the Norwegian scene. Just as I managed to hit the mark with the cover artwork as far as DARKTHRONE is concerned, it remains the same in terms of music. Those specific guitar riffs from beginning to end recall that band, but these are completely different compositions and there is no question of any copy. Just simple tremolo, just the way it should be. For listeners of more technical playing, these sounds will be without much meaning, yet beauty can be found in simplicity too. The bass perfectly complements the sounds of the guitars and the drums at times seem just as simple as the guitars, but in most compositions, it gets very dense with drums and cymbals, until it’s nice to listen to it. The vocals are very obtuse, screeching and full of hatred. Here, too, I have associations with black metal from many years ago. Such discs should come out more often, because it’s good to go back to the musical past.
