I must be sincere with you; I’ve taken this album just because I saw the year and I thought it could have been great because it belongs to the first death metal wave from Europe. Also the name inspired me something primordial, raw and truly rotten. I’ve listened to it few times and each time I couldn’t find anything really amazing in it in some parts while others are far better, even without being spectacular. Some things are a bit common and standard on this effort and some parts are actually quite weak and they never stood out in terms of goodness. I couldn’t expect something new because the period was the first death metal one and the style was still quite pure and uncontaminated.
The first song, “Pupenmord” is made of mid-paced tempo parts with morbid but absolutely anonymous guitars and they use also some filtrated vocals, trying to make the whole song a bit obscure but they fail. The few fastest parts are not powerful at all, while the classic death metal vocals seem the only thing that really has something more. The following “Mother” is bland and boring. The tempo is ultra slow and very close to the doom/death. The lead lines try to be dramatic but they are simply boring and uninspired. The following “Chemical Experience” is more canonical in its death metal style and finally shows some up tempo parts and the whole band seems more convincing and pissed off.
The production is not exceptional, considering the period, but the volumes are high and all the instruments are well audible. The vocals, like on the rest of the album, are the strongest point for this band. They are raspy, suffered and on the borderline between the rawest Obituary and Pestilence. Actually, also the mid-paced moments stench of “rednecks influences”, but they are far less developed and catchy. Also “Plants of the Bizarre” is better during the fast parts while features naff, filtrated vocals in some parts. Going on seems that the band is slowing becoming more convincing and brutal and in “Nightmares from the Past” we have more fast paces and blast beats too! The guitars are now really heavy and surely more inspired. Even the doom moments are well developed and competent. So, we continue with the fast “Pseudo Call” that displays very good and catchy up tempo parts while the guitars are blasting with a great number of riffs. “Sign” follows the same style but this time with few thrash metal oriented riffs too! The doom moments are always present but they are not so weak anymore, without being stunning…The title track is again fast and with a far better songwriting and structure while fast riffs and the lead lines are truly morbid. “Stop the Madness” is again a bit common during the doom/mid-paced progression. The solo part is better because it’s faster.
The last track “You (The Death Ballad)” is made of horror atmospheres by the keyboards and mad vocals. It’s quite disturbing and different. Overall, the first part of the album is really weak and with “Mother” we reached the lowest point, but the band achieved the goal of recovering well and fast, putting out some other good compositions. They are not great but they displayed their skills for the brutal parts and they weren’t absolutely terrible. If you want good songs, skip the first two/three of them and listen to the other ones. It’s not recommended, but if you come across it and it costs 5 euros or 5 dollars (it depends on the value), you can take it…
