Irae's new tremendous piece of Black Metal atavism is laid upon us. A celebratory release, very aptly made for the project's 20th anniversary, and a continuation of the project's blood pact with Signal Rex.
20 years storming the underground, 20 years of antihumanism, and 20 years not only honoring the unshakable traditions of this genre as trying to push it in different honorable and honest ways, Irae has traveled a long way, from the dangerous, shadowy days of the portuguese Black Circle, to the most recent years of a broader exposition but no less uncompromising and fiery essence. Vulturius has almost single-handedly lifted the torch of portuguese Black Metal, igniting this underground scene with not just Irae but a multitude of projects, although often accompanied by worthy and talented partners in atrocity.
With "Assim na Terra como no Inferno", we can see Irae, more than ever, honoring both past and present of Black Metal as well as the project's entire journey through the years. The 90's are here present as ever, with the ancient cold riffage straight out of Scandinavia or central Europe carrying the malignant energies of the past, relentlessly igniting this despotic present, while the band's origins are also certainly honored with a rawer production style when compared to the previous two records, that definitely fits both the spirit of this celebration and the versatility of these recordings, being this probably Irae's most diverse full-length to date, this is definitely felt a lot on the vocals as well, with a much more visceral and crude appearance here, which can definitely take us back to past moments in time such as "Terror 666" or Irae demos.
And the portuguese flame here is also very present, this willingness to glorify the olden days, while unapolagetically experimenting with new forms of portraying evilness and carrying the dark arts. This is clearly seen in the multitude of passages here with unconventionally placed acoustic guitars, the combination of multiple styles, the high variety of guitar textures, moments of ghoulish dementia, but there's also place for different and very interesting elements like the swirly lead guitars at "Relíqvia de Espinhvz" that invoke those of Arizmenda, the dark Folk introductions, the dense and foggy guitars in "Zangrandv v Rebanhv... Uma Melodi" that resemble the likes of Evilfeast or the more epic elements of "Símbolos do Império", which could easily be seen on a track from a band like Necromantia.
Whichever way one might hunt for influences one thing is for sure, Vulturius did once again what he pleased, staying true to himself, and not being a one trick poney trying to repeat the same formula over and over again, a trap most projects fall into nowadays with the lack of real understanding of the genre. Like it or dislike it, Irae is more alive than ever with this release, and promises to continue the desecration for times to come, with no sign of shortage of creativity.
